International shipments may require that a Electronic Export Information (EII) be filed with the U.S. Census Bureau's AES to control exports & for official US export states. A EII is used to control exports and act as a source document for official U.S. export statistics. EIIs must be prepared for shipments when the shipment through U.S. Postal Services is valued over $500.
EIIs are required for shipments not using the U.S. Postal Services when the value of the commodities, classified under any single Schedule B number, is over $2,500. EIIs must be prepared, regardless of the value, for all shipments requiring an export license or destined for countries restricted by the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) or International Traffic and Arms Regulations (ITAR). Contact the Office of Legal Affairs for assistance in determining if your item is export controlled. All shipments to Country Group E:1 regardless of value require a EII. Currently, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan and Syria are included in Country Group E:1. This list changes frequently, please contact the Office of Legal Affairs to obtain the most current information.
FedEx* will process the EII on your behalf for a nominal fee of $10 when you utilize their shipping services; however, if you choose a different carrier you will be acting as your own agent and will be responsible for any errors in shipping. If export violations occur as a result of shipping items abroad, the individual who completed the shipping documents is subject to export control laws and may be held liable for any violations that occur as a result. As your own agent, you must coordinate with the Office of Legal Affairs, Research Security, U.S. Customs and other entities deemed necessary based on the item you are shipping.
